Jaw Disorder Treatments

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the area where your lower jaw bone connects to the skull. When the disk that compose this joint slip out of place, it can cause a variety of symptoms. Thankfully, our dentist has training in recognizing these symptoms and experience in treating its conditions. Dr. Juan Carlos Flores provides TMJ disorder treatments for patients in Coral Gables, Westchester, Doral, and the surrounding Miami communities.

Diagnosing TMJ Disorders

The temporomandibular joint is made of a disk-shaped cushion, the connecting bone of the jaw, and the surrounding structure of the skull. TMJ disorders occur when the articular disk, the cushion of the joint, slips out of place or erodes. This inadequate support of the lower jaw can cause the jaw bone to rub against the skull or push incorrectly against the disk. TMJ disorders can result in symptoms which include a clicking or popping noise when eating or speaking, sizeable discomfort in the joint and the surrounding area, and a locking sensation of the jaw.

If you experience any of these symptoms, please call our Miami dental practice for an appointment. Dr. Flores can examine your symptoms and evaluate the jaw to determine if a TMJ disorder is likely, referring you out to a specialist when needed. Once the evaluation process is complete and it has been determined that you have a disorder, Dr. Juan Carlos Flores can move onto treating the condition.

Treating the TMJ Disorder

While the cause of TMJ disorder is not always certain, teeth grinding and jaw clenching can be contributing causes; these conditions can also worsen the discomfort of existing TMJ disorder.

There are a few different treatments for TMJ disorders, depending upon the severity of the case. For mild cases, Dr. Flores treats TMJ disorders using occlusal guards and bite-adjustment fillings. Occlusal guards are appliances which are similar in appearance to mouth guards and prevent teeth from coming together. Additionally, if an improperly aligned bite is worsening the discomfort of your TMJ disorder, the careful placement of composite fillings can restore your bite to a proper alignment.
